๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ Is Boracay worth it? When to go, the White Beach stations and what to do

Guide to Boracay: why the island was closed in 2018, when to go to avoid the seaweed, the three White Beach stations and where to stay, the other beaches, the paraw sunset sail and the activities. Prices, the rules since reopening and how many days to stay.

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ Is Boracay worth it? When to go, the White Beach stations and what to do

Boracay was the first international tourist destination in the Philippines and for years the symbol of the country's mass tourism. Millions of visitors, mostly from China and Korea, descended on it to the point that in 2018 the government closed it for six months: the sewers, the beach and the infrastructure couldn't cope any more.

Today it's back, cleaner, tidier and more careful with the environment. But mass tourism is back too, and not much that's authentic has survived: you could be in the Philippines, or in the Caribbean, or on any other packaged tropical island. If you don't like very touristy, westernised places, you can skip it without regrets.

What nobody argues about is how beautiful White Beach is: four kilometres of powder-white sand and some of the finest sunsets you'll ever see. If you're after relaxation, postcard sea, comfort, water sports and a bit of evening life, Boracay does its job brilliantly.

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ How to get to Boracay

Boracay doesn't have an airport. You land at Caticlan (MPH), 15 minutes by boat from the island, or at Kalibo (KLO), cheaper but an hour and a half by van from the port. There are direct flights to both from Cebu and Manila.

At Caticlan port you pay the environmental fee, the terminal fee and the boat, all in cash. The whole thing takes half an hour. On the island you get around by e-tricycle: it's 20 minutes from one coast to the other.

๐Ÿ“… How many days to spend in Boracay

2-4 days. Two are enough for the beach and a sunset sail, four if you want to add island hopping, water sports and a bit of lazing about.

๐ŸŒŠ When to go to Boracay: watch out for the seaweed

This is the most important thing to know. For part of the dry season, roughly February to early May, White Beach is invaded by seaweed. The sea is still fine for swimming but the white-sand postcard disappears.

There are two good windows:

  • December and January: perfect beach, but peak season, inflated prices and a lot of people
  • May and early June: seaweed gone, crowds thinned out, better prices. For many people this is the best moment

From June to October the monsoon brings rain and wind straight onto White Beach, which faces west. In those months life shifts to the east side, at Bulabog. ๐Ÿ‘‰ When to go to the Philippines

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Where to stay in Boracay

The island is so small that the area doesn't change your stay much. The advice is to stay on White Beach, so you're in the middle of everything and you can swim straight out of your room. White Beach is split into three "stations":

  • Station 1: the northern end, quieter, with the widest sand and the luxury resorts
  • Station 2: the centre of the action, restaurants, bars, D'Mall for shopping
  • Station 3: the southern end, cheaper and more laid-back, with hostels and guesthouses

๐Ÿ–๏ธ The beaches of Boracay

  • White Beach: four kilometres, the heart of the island, the sunsets
  • Puka Beach: to the north, sand mixed with shell fragments, wilder and less crowded
  • Ilig-Iligan Beach: small and quiet, great for swimming in peace
  • Bulabog Beach: on the east side, opposite White Beach. With the Amihan wind, from November to April, it's one of the best-known kitesurf spots in Asia. It's not a swimming beach

โ›ต What to do in Boracay

  • Sunset sailing on a paraw, the traditional sailing boat with outriggers: an hour at sunset, a handful of pesos, the best experience on the island
  • Island hopping: Crystal Cove, Crocodile Island for snorkelling, Magic Island for cliff jumping
  • Parasailing, paddle board, kayak, banana boat: all available on White Beach, booked right there on the sand
  • Snorkelling and diving at Coral Garden and the other spots around the island
  • Kitesurfing at Bulabog, with schools for every level in season
  • Massages on the beach, yoga, or simply nothing at all

๐Ÿ’ก Things to know before going to Boracay

  • Since the 2018 reopening there are strict rules: no alcohol, cigarettes or parties on the beach, no paid sandcastles, a capped number of tourists. The fines are real.
  • It's among the most expensive destinations in the Philippines: accommodation and restaurants cost twice the national average. ๐Ÿ‘‰ How much it costs to travel in the Philippines
  • There are ATMs and you can pay by card in a lot of places, which is rare elsewhere. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Withdrawing without fees
  • Chinese New Year, between late January and February, brings a spike in tourists and prices.

โœ… Boracay in short

  • Is it worth it? Yes if you want comfort, a perfect beach and water sports. No if you're after the authentic Philippines
  • Days: 2-4
  • When: December-January or May-early June, never February-April because of the seaweed
  • Where to stay: White Beach, Station 1 for quiet, 2 for the buzz, 3 for the budget
  • Not to be missed: the sunset on a paraw
  • More authentic alternatives: ๐Ÿ‘‰ Siquijor, ๐Ÿ‘‰ Port Barton, Bantayan (in the ๐Ÿ‘‰ Cebu guide)
